Part 3 – EHS Incident Management: Monitoring Environmental Compliance

This is the final instalment of our three-part blog series on Environmental, Health and Safety Management (EHS). Please subscribe to our blog to keep up to date with the latest industry discussions here >

So far, we have explored how you can leverage the past to influence the future, by moving away from the fixation on measuring and tracking historical data with little emphasis on translating data insights into actions for preparation of the future.

We also dived into what compliance is and how can you achieve performance excellence with sound EHS management techniques and platforms, assessing the validity of compliance that is at times underestimated or overlooked when performance excellence is concerned.

Let’s now focus on what monitoring environmental compliance entails and the range of monitoring duties organisations have to perform, and the role of technology in streamlining these tasks and requirements.

Engaging your environment

Environmental standards are put in place to oversee the environmental impacts of an organisation’s operations. These commonly include but are not limited to:

  • Air Quality
  • Water Quality
  • Flora and Fauna
  • Waste Management
  • Noise
  • Vibration
  • Rehabilitation

Organisations have a range of different monitoring tasks to perform in order to comply with legislation and/or be able to make informed operational decisions. The number of samples, sampling frequency, timing and analysis requirements will differ between industries, countries, states and provinces, and the project.

Investing in technology

Keeping abreast all these requirements, the associated regulators, stakeholders and sampling can be extensive (especially for companies, often with complex and high-risk operations, exploration, mining, oil and gas industries).

Having a designated platform to stay on top of organisational, operational and industry requirements helps keep relevant data in one place and enables you to access any piece of information at any given time.

Leveraging software platforms for digitalisation and automation makes all the difference. It compels organisations to get serious and organised about achieving their goals and objectives to:

  • Define monitoring programs
  • Observe exceedance notifications
  • Minimise human error with automated laboratory imports
  • Interpret data insights and trend analysis
  • Encourage scalability and grow the software platform with your business

Get involved with INX InViron

One such technology simplifying operations for managers and employees is INX InViron, which assists organisations to keep on top of requirements, planning sampling, sending reminders, log data collected from samples in the field, and automating the import of data back into the system from the laboratories. Perhaps the most critical part of the system is validating data against permits or licensing requirements, receiving first trigger level and then exceedance notifications.

A multinational gold producer, with global operating, development and exploration projects has been using INX InViron and multiple other INX solutions for over 10 years and has successfully scaled the system across its organisation From the original deployment on two sites within one country, INX solutions are now used in seven sites across five countries. Being able to scale a system to meet operational activities and accommodate business expansions has been crucial to supporting their overall operational excellence.

There are many parts within the INX suite that interact and ‘talk’ to one another, and share relevant information for multiple reasons:

  1. Eliminate the duplication of data
  2. Give users insights to the information stored in a system they may not have access
  3. Increase efficiency and match the users’ task workflow

All these relationships make it easier for organisations to view data holistically and begin to pre-empt trends and remedial action or provide an easy way to report on environmental sustainability.
