INX Stories: Hello from the Home Office

As the Coronavirus craziness ensued and our employees here at INX Software were asked to work from home (WFH) to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone and mitigate ourselves from the potential spread, new challenges, as well as opportunities, came with the new territory – our studies and make-shift home offices at the dining table.

We look forward to slowly transition our teams and departments back into the office at our Perth headquarters, at the Canadian branch and continue to support our employees who always work remotely in Queensland and Calgary.

Hear from some of our employees about their WFH experiences, what their pros and cons are, and what learnings they’re going to take with them for the future.

Let’s hear from Kim, Learning Solutions Consultant.

1. Have you found it easy to adjust to working from home (WFH)?
Yes, very much so.

2. Where have you set up your designated work station?
I used my desk in the study and replaced my monitor. Some DIY projects happened as well, which included building new shelves, which I don’t think would have happened without having to work from home.

3. Have you stuck to your daily morning routine before work, or has it changed?
The only thing that really changed was not going to the gym, and instead doing yoga at home. Outside of that, my routine stayed more or less the same. I definitely found more time for exercise, especially without having to account for the daily commute, I had more time for walks and breaks.

4. Have you found you are more productive WFH?
Generally, yes. Yet you do find yourself working for longer and uninterrupted compared to being in an office space and trying to block out the noise. Being in a quiet environment at home enabled me to solidly focus on my projects, especially in the nature of my highly detail-oriented role, as well as having the social team component of virtual meetings and interactions.

5. What is something that you miss from being in the office?
Interactions with people are nice to have, chats in the kitchen is something I missed. I’m glad I had that at home with my husband instead of being on my own all of the time, it’s what helped me stay sane. What makes a big difference is having the option and access to other parts of your life, such as social interactions as well as time for solitude.

6. Now that we look forward to slowly integrate back into an office work routine, what is something that you’ve learned from WFH that you’d like to take with you for the future?
The concept of time has been challenged; what time I have to get up, be at work, leave work…to fit ‘stuff to do’ in a day. It has made me realise I do have the time to enjoy more of home life, to cook more and do things I wouldn’t normally do and try; because I made the time. As we look forward to returning to the office, I’d like to not take my previous worry about time back into the office and to remember that we do have the time and flexibility.
