Kinross acquired its ownership in the Chirano Gold Mine on September 17, 2010 upon completing its acquisition of Red Back Mining Inc. Chirano is located in southwestern Ghana, approximately 100 kilometres southwest of Kumasi, Ghana’s second largest city. Chirano achieved its first gold pour in October 2005, and consists of 11 deposits: Akwaaba, Suraw, Akoti South, Akoti North, Akoti Extended, Paboase, Tano, Obra South, Obra, Sariehu and Mamnao.
Open pit and underground ore are processed at the Chirano Processing Plant. The capacity of the mill is approximately 3.5 million tonnes per annum. Processing involves crushing, ball mill grinding, leaching, and CIL. Gold is recovered by an elution circuit.
We spoke to Chirano Gold Mine, about their need for a workforce management solution to improve their compliance, reduce their risk and increase their productivity.
What were you previously using to manage your safety and training what were the limitations with this?
We were previously using Microsoft Word and Excel, which was quite problematic as there was always a lot of paperwork involved. There were substantial volumes of hard copy reports being filed which required provision for filing cabinets and office space. Incident reports were manually generated, and incident investigation reports were manually transmitted from/between supervisors, investigation team members, head of departments and general managers. Action management reports were also manually generated and circulated to respective head of departments for closeout and sign off. Employee skills and competencies were not centralised and action reminders and or follow-ups had to be personally initiated.
What criteria were set when purchasing a new solution?
We were looking for a centralised health, safety and environmental solution which would minimise paper use, reduce delay in report transmission through to closure, keep track of events, provide automation and notification of what’s required, maintain registers, competencies, compliances and procedures (CCPs), and schedule, conduct and maintain training records.
What have been some notable changes since implementing INX?
Since implementing INX, we now have a drastic reduction in paper use, and an easy to navigate system that is a one-stop shop for document control. Accessing reports, events and records is just a click away and much simpler than before. Since implementation, various statistics have been rolled out which includes campaigns against hand injuries, cardinal rules, counts of roll-over incidents involving dump trucks, incident causation factors, serious injury and fatality (SIF) analysis and additional training on incident and accident investigation.
How would you describe the implementation?
The implementation involved a detailed requirements analysis process which the team at INX then mapped out into the solution to match our requirements. This was followed by user training to ensure we would be able to self-maintain and manage the solution post-implementation. INX are clearly experienced in the delivery of solutions like this; they possess fantastic problem-solving abilities as well as being able to train large groups of users (mine sitewide in our case) to full system knowledge. After the implementation, the team at INX were readily available to offer any form of assistance at any time of the day. They were remarkable.

I would definitely recommend INX to other customers! INX is a fit-for-purpose tool known for its simplicity and user-friendliness.
