OZ Minerals operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold-silver mine located in the central north of South Australia, 130 kilometers south-east of Coober Pedy. Prominent Hill, which has been operating since 2009, is transitioning from an open-pit mine to an underground operation and has a mine life to 2028. OZ Minerals is also developing one of Australia’s largest copper-gold resources at Carrapateena in South Australia, and has a pipeline of local and international exploration projects.


We spoke to the Systems Administrator at OZ Minerals’ Prominent Hill operation about their workforce and environmental management and their journey from requirements gathering to selecting the right solution and finally reflecting on the outcome of this.

When asked about the software they were using to manage their workforce and environment, they outlined that they had individual software/spreadsheets in place for:

  • Flight and accommodation requirements
  • Risk management
  • Incident reporting
  • Environmental obligations
  • Online training requirements
  • Stakeholder communications
  • Each system ran independently of each other and required a separate System

Background and requirement

Having identified the need for company-wide management of training, competencies, learning, health, safety, incidents, stakeholders, obligations, communications, medical surveillance, legal compliance, travel, flights, accommodation and rosters, a solution was sought to provide:

  • An integrated and centralised solution that replaced their disparate systems and documents
  • Site wide control and management
  • Flexibility and configuration to adapt to ongoing legislative and business changes
  • Simplification of normal work activities and business processes
  • The latest data to be available at all times
  • Enterprise level reporting

The process

Prominent Hill originally went to market through a formal tender process to identify suitable candidates for a training solution, for which INX InTuition was selected.

Since then, they have tendered for other requirements such as travel, flights, roster and accommodation management for which INX InFlight was selected.

They then went to tender again some 18 months later to replace their risk management, environment reporting and health management solutions.
